Teacher Resources

Veteran Affairs Canada

The most impressive array of learning activities for teachers looking for Remembrance Day ideas I have found has to be on line at Veterans Affairs Canada. Once there, after clicking on the Youth and Educators link you will be impressed with the many resources. Here are some of them listed below.

. reference lists . booklets . history . games . wartime recipes . events . posters . heroes . projects . valentine for vets . and other valuable links

My personal favorite and one that I have recently done with my grade five class is Postcards for Peace. It was a very meaningful activity. Teachers, you simply order on-line 30 postcards. Students then anonymously express a message of thanks on their postcard to those veterans who have served Canada. The postcards are sent away by teachers as a class set to an address of choice provided on the Veteran Affairs Web Site. When my class did this activity, they received back an official reply and were very thankful to hear that the veterans had received their postcards and how much they appreciated their thoughtful comments.

Legions

If you are looking for a more interactive experience for your students, contact your local Legion to inquire as to which veterans might be interested in coming to your school to talk with students. I have found the people at the Legions to be very approachable and receptive to such involvement. They appreciate it when the community takes an active interest to help inform our “adults-of-the-future” about our history. This can be a very rich exchange of ideas and a wonderful experience for students. However remember that veterans may not be available on November 11th as they may have prior commitments on Remembrance Day.

You can also go on line at www.legion.ca to inquire about their many resources including literary packages and student contests.
